CompTIA stands for Computing Technology Industry Association and is an association of over 8,000 companies in the IT industry.
They provide computer certifications for IT Professionals on a variety of subjects. These industry recognized certifications include A+, Network+, Server+, Linux+, Security+ and others. CompTIA certifications tend to be entry level in difficulty and never require upgrading.

CompTIA offers twelve certification programs in key technology areas.

CompTIA A+ CompTIA Network+ CompTIA Server+ CompTIA Security+
CompTIA RFID+ CompTIA CTT+ CompTIA CDIA+ CompTIA Linux+
CompTIA Project+ CompTIA Convergence+ CEA-CompTIA DHTI+ CompTIA PDI+

The IT certification arena (Cisco, HP, Novell) recognize the value of CompTIA credentials. Some vendors have integrated CompTIA titles into their program requirements.

For instance, Microsoft accepts either the Network+ or the Server+ as an elective credit for their Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) title. Microsoft also accepts the Security+ as an elective for their Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification program.
